I had similar problem at one of our customer, the issues was resolved when updated to BI 4.0 w/ SP6. We tried everything with BEx query using BI 4.0 w/ SP4 but nothing worked until finally were recommended to update to SP6.
What version of BI 4.0 are you running ?
